The Ancient World provides a window on our own
Classics and Archaeology is a leading program for the study of the ancient world. The only program of its kind in Australia, it is home to cutting edge research and field study undertaken by its staff, researchers and fellows. The program is affiliated with insitutions such as The Classical Association of Victoria (CAV) with whom we regularly collaborate on a variety of lectures and events.
The program provides students with a multi-disciplinary perspective on ancient Graeco-Roman, Aegean and Near Eastern civilisations. The study of Classics, Archaeology, Latin and Ancient Greek will give you insight and understanding into your world today by exploring how ancient cultures have contributed to the development of our modern world.
We offer subjects that cover such topics as archaeology, religious, political and social life in ancient societies, classical literature and mythology, art and architecture and a range of course options. Consider joining us and undertaking an overseas study venture, participating in hands-on fieldwork and pursuing a single study subject through the Community Access Program.
Research in the program is diverse yet provides a holistic perspective on the ancient world, with staff involved in a number of projects, many of which are funded by the Australian Research Council. Current projects range from archaeological surveys and excavations to the development of award-winning multimedia study resources. The program also offers access to world-class research facilities such as the classics and archaeology collection at the Ian Potter Museum of Art.
Classics and archaeology has experienced a renewed popularity within contemporary culture with a number of recent, exciting discoveries and a steady flow of classical and archaeological-themed television shows and blockbuster films. The broader community can participate in this resurgence and the vibrant academic culture of the program through the Community Access Program, Summer Schools and the public lecture program organised by The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies which staff, researchers and visiting scholars regularly contribute. The program also maintains strong links to secondary school communities and provides support for students studying the classics.
