The Council of the Classical Association of Victoria has funded activities which it deems beneficial to promotion of Classical Studies, Latin, Ancient Greek and Ancient World Studies in the State of Victoria. Such activities have included (but are not limited to) conferences on ancient world topics, visits and public lectures by overseas or interstate scholars, activities for secondary school students studying classics or classical languages, publication initiatives by postgraduate students in classics and artistic productions on classical themes.
- There is one annual deadline for applications for support of conferences. The next deadline is February, 2014. This date ensures that all applications are available for consideration and decision at the first Council meeting of the year (usually held in the last two weeks of February). The Council will appoint a sub-committee to review the applications and make recommendations to Council at that meeting.
- The maximum amount of money to be allocated in total to conference funding in any one year is $2000. Please note that, should the Council receive several worthy applications in any one year, the money available for individual conferences may be substantially less than this.
- Applicants should apply in writing (usually email) to the Honorary Secretary. There is no cover sheet or specific form for applications. However, applicants are encouraged to explain not only the topic of their conference but how it benefits Classics in Victoria and indicate whether members of the Classical Association of Victoria will be able to attend the conference at a reduced registration fee. Applicants might also explain whether the conference would be of interest to secondary school teachers and students and, if so, whether it is scheduled during the school holidays. Applications must include a budget which indicates how much funding is being sought from the CAV, what funding from other sources (especially from conference registration fees) is projected and what the CAV funding will specifically be used for. For example, many applications ask the CAV to donate money for the airfare or accommodation of a keynote speaker (in which case quotes for airfare or accommodation should be included).
Funding for Speakers
Applications for funding academic scholars or speakers visiting the Melbourne area can be made at any time in writing (usually email) to the Honorary Secretary, but should be made at least two months before the visit. Such speakers usually offer a public lecture or daytime research seminar which the members of the CAV may attend without cost. The following guidelines should be borne in mind:
- The amount of money granted to any one visiting scholar is a maximum of $600; if the CAV contributes accommodation expenses, it is normally for no more than two nights.
- The maximum amount of money to be allocated for visiting scholars in any one year is $1500. If this amount has been used up in the calendar year then unfortunately some applications must be denied.
- There is no cover sheet or specific form for applications. However, applicants are encouraged to explain when the academic scholar will visit, which institutions (s)he will visit and what topics (s)he will speak about, how much funding is being sought and specifically for what purpose (e.g. airfare and/or accommodation). A proper budget and any estimates for travel or accommodation should be included.
- The academic visitor should normally visit during University term times and be willing to deliver both a seminar and public lecture, preferably at more than one institution.
- The person applying for funding should commit to make all arrangements (especially at their own institution) for such seminars and lectures and commit to be in town in order to host the visitor (including the arrangement of accommodation and transportation between venues).
- The CAV will not accept responsibility for picking up tabs for incidental expenses (e.g. taxi transportation costs, laundry at accommodations etc.) unless these have been explicitly agreed to beforehand.
Funding for Other Activities
The Council of the Classical Association of Victoria has occasionally funded other activities which it deems to be beneficial to the promotion of Classics in Victoria. In the past, it has offered funding for the following:
- a theatrical project on the Oedipus story;
- a fund-raising event for the Xavier College Classics Society, targeting students at Year 9;
- a Latin and Ancient Greek Activity Day at Ormond College for Year 9-12 students;
- a publication of conference proceedings of a postgraduate conference in classical studies.
Applicants for funding of 'other activities' may apply in writing (usually email) to the Honorary Secretary at any time. There is no cover sheet or specific form for applications. However, applicants are encouraged to explain how their activity benefits Classics in Victoria, how much funding is being sought and specifically for what purpose. A budget and any estimates (where appropriate) should be included.
